Clay Commune is a boutique ceramics studio located in the heart of Newtown. We offer studio workshops in wheel throwing and hand building as well as specialist classes run throughout the year. The studio is modern and very comfortable and over its 2 levels has areas designated for hand building and wheel throwing and glazing/decorating. We sell a wide variety of ceramics supplies as well as hardware such as wheels/slabrollers/pugmills and kilns. We have a wide variety of ceramics available in store and through our online store.

Widely used for a multitude of different applications - not limited to Raku temperatures. This versatile clay can be fired to stoneware. With a large content of fine grog, it retains excellent plasticity making it suitable for larger work. Great working properties for coiling, hand building and slab work. This body burnishing well due to its fine clay base. Unique in its quality, there is no substitute. Making this one of our most popular clays.

KEANE Mid Fire No 6 is a smooth white plastic body great for domestic ware and medium size hand building. It has an excellent glaze fit with all commercial mid fire glazes.
The feel and smoothness of this clay makes it ideal for throwing. Customers currently using this body also have had great success with slab rolling and slumping domestic ware.
Shrinkage at Cone 6: 13% wet to fired
Porosity at Cone 6: 0.5% to 1%

Keane’s new Mid Fire 33. This is a versatile clay body with excellent throwing properties. A cone 6 light buff body with a beautiful iron fleck. Much the same as our popular Stoneware 33 body.

Wet to dry 6 to 7 %

KEANE's new Black Mid Fire. This is a versatile clay body with excellent throwing properties. It uses a black stain only, making it perfect for domestic ware.
Shrinkage:
Wet to dry: 5 - 6%
Total at cone 6: 12 - 13%
Please note that not all Clear Glazes can handle a black this pure! For a crystal Clear Gloss finish over our Black Mid Fire, we recommend avoiding glazes which include Zinc.
As our glaze suppliers do not supply lists of their ingredients, it is strongly recommended that all glazes are tested every time on samples prior to application on finished products. Our suppliers may vary their recipe from batch to batch and subsequently results may vary.

New KEANE's Warm Mid Fire 33 is a wonderful throwing clay body.
At cone 6 it has a nice milk chocolate colour with shades of red. At cone 5 it fires with a lovely warm red blush. It has the same speckles as our 33 range.
